The International Alumni Board - Message from the Dean

At the start of February, 19 of our alumni chapter leaders met in Munich as the inaugural gathering of our new International Alumni Board. Over the course of two days, our volunteers met with Henley Business School staff from our offices and campuses across the world (UK, South Africa, Germany, Finland and Denmark). Our evermore vibrant and lively network was well represented and many action points were established for its future development.

The purpose was to share successes, challenges and to bring together our community around a shared vision for enacting real positive change together. We as an organisation stressed that Henley Business School is a truly international organisation rooted in our UK heritage. With colleagues working across the world and with 75,000 alumni living in 150 countries, we truly have a global network. The group also heard from Dr Stephan Gerschewski (Lecturer in International Business & Strategy) who shared extracts from paper Advancing the entrepreneurial orientation construct: the role of passion and perseverance. This is another step towards connecting our alumni with our leading academic research.

At the end of the meeting each chapter attending renewed their commitment to the mission, joined with us in a shared vision for change for the future, and agreed to help further Henley Business School’s strategic objectives around international development, student recruitment, fundraising and global presence. A key phrase that emerged which summed up the feeling in the room was “We are establishing positive connections with a global impact”. We are already starting to see the positive effects of true collaboration, with new events being organised world-wide.

All the International Alumni Board members highlighted the need for better communication between our alumni and friends. As an immediate action, we will launch our new Henley Business School platform by this year’s summer graduations. This will operate as a social network, alumni directory, mentoring hub, events directory, knowledge repository and much more. This will truly revolutionise how our community connects with each other.

The board will next meet in 2019. In the meantime, why not make the most of our world class international network by connecting with your local alumni chapter. If there is not one local to you, and you would consider partnering with us to create one, I would invite you to contact our alumni team. I am determined to leverage the International Alumni Board into a movement for positive change

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to express our collective sadness at the passing of Chan Sui-Jeung, former Committee Member and founder of the Hong Kong Alumni Association. Undoubtedly he would have enjoyed this gathering and his wisdom in helping steer this group will be missed.
